Book review: Grieving the Child I Never Knew

Grieving the Child I Never Knew: A Devotion for Comfort in the Loss of Your Unborn or Newly Born Child

Kathe Wunnenberg

Kathe Wunneberg has experienced the inconceivable pain and heartbreak of three miscarriages and the death of an infant. She has walked the lonely road of grieving and desires to comfort other women in the same circumstances through Grieving the Child I Never Knew.

This is a beautifully designed devotional that is brimming with comforting words, prayers, and Scripture. It is an amazing resource for women who have experienced loss, BUT also is very useful for people who are close to a woman who has lost a baby (family members, Bible study members, pastors, etc) so that they can better understand how to be there during these difficult times.

The thirty-two devotionals in the book are divided in six parts: Hiding, Suffering, Questioning, Forgiving, Relating, Seeking, and Sharing Your Story. Along with the devotionals, there are also other great resources in this book including: Readings for Special Days or Needs, A Prayer Guide for Special Days, and Discussion Guide.

I have never endured the pain of miscarriage or a still-born baby, but I believe this devotional can be a great comfort for those who have dealt with this. I also think it is a great book to have so that I can be praying for friends, family, co-workers, church members, or anyone else that I know is walking through the dark, painful valley of miscarriage and death of a newborn.

  1. This seems like a very powerful book. I pray I never experience a miscariage. I have a few friends who have recently, it seems to be more often than you'd think. Glad there are resources to help people get through it.
